ANTIQUE FISHING LURES

ANTIQUE FISHING LURES
CAN BE WORTH
HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS

by Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut

Antique Fishing Lures date to the 19th century, the story being that in the late 1890s James Heddon carved a frog lure out of a piece of wood, put in the water and caught a bass. Today, Heddon, Creek Chub, Shakespeare and other Antique Fishing Lures are renowned as the finest old lures and are worth hundreds of dollars.

Some of the famous Antique Fishing Lures models are the Heddon Belly Weight Underwater Minnow and Crab Wiggler; the Creek Chub Wiggler and Clothespin; and the Shakespeare Kazoo Wobbler.

You probably won't have any of these oldest Antique Fishing Lures. In fact, only eight original Heddon frogs have been found.

Fishing will never be the same
with the Birdie fishing lure.

But you can possibly find more recent antique lures (post 1900) in your grandfather's tackle box.

The oldest lures are made of wood, unglossed and not painted in bright colors. Post 1900 Antique Fishing Lures are carved to look like tiny bait fish and are very colorful: strawberry with black spots, lime green, yellow and red with an airbrush appearance or a solid color with a spotted finish.

If you find Antique Fishing Lures, you can cherish them forever or sell them for hundreds of dollars to avid collectors who form clubs and post blogs about their rare finds.

....www.scientificfishing.com, makers of some of best contemporary fishing lures, offers Birdie Lures, which are carved from beechwood, like the first Antique Fishing Lures. Birdie lures resemble live birds - the Little Eagle, Purple Breasted Sparrow and Red/Yellow Wing Wren. They look like works of art that could be displayed on your mantle, but they are live action fishing lures that spurt water out of their open beaks to attract predator fish that attack helpless prey. Cast them, let them float and bob the beak to simulate a bird pecking at insects and the predator fish will attack, giving you a big catch.
