FISHING PLUGS
FISHING PLUGS ARE TOP HARD BODY LURE
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
Fishing plugs are a popular type of hard bodied fishing lure, frequently known by other names, such as crankbaits and minnows. Typical fishing plugs are solid or hollow bodied, made out of wood or plastic and sometimes separated into two pieces joined by a flexible link to create the impression of a fish whipping its tail fin. A thin metal or plastic lip is attached to the front of the body to promote the diving ability and wobbling movement of the fishing plugs. The fishing plugs also feature two or three treble hooks.
Fishing plugs float on the surface or suspend in the water and simultaneously dive under the surface.

Fishing plugs float on the surface or suspend in the water and simultaneously dive under the surface. They can dive to a shallow depth or deep depth depending on the size of the lip. Talented anglers vary the speed of their retrieve and cast and retrieve fishing plugs to find the hiding places of predatory fish. Another strategy is to choose fishing plugs that are similar in size and shape to the local forage, a "match the hatch" theory that works when speckled trout and striped bass are foraging on pilchards and peanut bunker.
www.scientificfishing.com, maker of the world's best scientifically designed lures, offers the Crank n' Spin Minnow, one of the newest fishing plugs that combines the attributes of crankbaits and spinnerbaits into a lure that increases the catch rate. The Crank n' Spin is a 4.5" fat-bellied shad with a strategically positioned blade in the back with metal balls inside the lure that rattle to add a sound component to the visibly attracting spinning blade.
