When it comes to fishing rods, there are many different types for different kinds of fishing and if you're looking to buy one, you should know exactly what you're looking for.
For inshore fishing in shallow water for fish less than 20 pounds you need fishing rods that can handle a good size fish but aren't too heavy. For fly fishing, look for fishing rods in the 6 to 8 weight range for mid size fish. For surf fishing, fishing rods are 9 to 14 feet in length with spinning or casting reels, designed for long casts that can get baits out beyond the breakers.
Pocket Fisherman fishing rods are light enough to handle, but strong enough to
reel in the big fish.

The length of fishing rods is also important. Longer rods mean longer casts and make lure casting easier. Shorter rods are better for bottom fishing.
If you're 5'5" or less, a 7-foot rod will be difficult to use, so get a shorter rod that makes for easier flipping and casting. 4 1/2 to 6 foot rods are suited for lighter bait and fish such as perch and crappie. They also work well in bushy areas. Rods 6 feet and longer are good for bigger bait, longer casting and stronger fish, such as bass and catfish.
If you're looking for compact fishing rods you can take anywhere, try the Mini Rod from www.scientificfishing.com. This is the rod that telescopes from the size of a large pen to a 42 inch tournament quality rod and comes with 120 yards of 4 pound test line pre-installed, so you're all ready to fish. With a rod and reel this size, you can catch big fish.
