Lake trout mackinaws are one of the most exciting gamefish to pursue because they're bigger, weighing up to 50 lbs with wide mouths and sharp teeth that make them extra aggressive. They swim in cool deep water, preferring temperatures of 45-55 degrees in depths of up to 200 feet most of the year.
You can find mackinaws in the Great Lakes, the Western states and New England. Jigging and trolling are the preferred fishing methods for lake trout and a number of lures can be used.
Anglers frequently use spinners, with blades that spin at faster speeds, which are ideal for trolling for mackinaws. Crankbaits with heavier cranks are ideal for lake trout fishing because they go deep.

Spoon lures also work well, with fat bodied spoons your best bet because they cast well. Jigging spoons can be used for a jerk and pause retrieve that will catch lake trout.
