MICHIGAN MUSKIE FISHING

THE BEST PLACES FOR
MICHIGAN MUSKIE FISHING

By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut

If you're fishing for muskies (esox masquinongy), the large freshwater fish most commonly found in lakes and large rivers in the Great Lakes region, you'll be right at home in Michigan, where they can be found at locations around the state. Michigan muskie fishing is best in late spring, just after muskies have spawned, when water temperatures are cool and the fish are aggressive and in late fall, when water temps cool again and muskies engage in a late-season feeding binge.

Here are some the best places for Michigan muskie fishing.

* Skegemog Lake -- the premier muskie lake in Northwest Michigan, where muskies gravitate to the shallow, weedy confines of the 2,561-acre lake, especially in spring and early summer.
* Black Lake -- Northern Michigan's 10,130 acre lake has a respectable population of big muskies.

* Lake St. Clair -- the lake on the Canadian border is great for Michigan muskie fishing because they move to Canadian waters in summer and early fall.
* St. Marys, Tahquemenon Rivers -- Great Lakes and northern muskies in the 30 to 40-inch range can be found in these rivers.
* Western U.P. -- Because the area is so close to Wisconsin, where muskie is king, you'll find plenty of muskie in this region.

A fishing tip for Michigan muskie fishing is to choose a big lure, which will help you catch big fish like muskies, which can be over 40 inches and weigh over 60 pounds.
A lure you might try is the KickTail from NGC Sports, the world leader in NGC Sports lures(http://www.scientificfishing.com). The lure mimics the motion of a real fish with patented technology that breaks the tail into five segments, which causes the tail to wag, unlike other hard baits. The lure was tested by professional fishermen and caught almost three times as many fish as other lures and live bait and it frequently caught bigger fish, like muskie.

The KickTail is one of many fine lures available from NGC Sports, which has won awards for its tournament tested lures and has sold millions of them, but not in stores.
