MICHIGAN WALLEY FISHING
MICHIGAN WALLEY FISHING IN LAKES AROUND THE STATE
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
If you're angling for walley, Michigan is the place to go with Michigan walley fishing popular in lakes around the state. Walley, also spelled walleye, is named because of the fact that their eyes reflect light. They grow to 30 inches in length and weigh up to 15 pounds. They are found primarily in cold water lakes but can survive in warmer water, too.
The best places to go for Michigan walleye fishing are:
* Lake Gogebic -- the 12,800 acre lake in the Upper Peninsula is a paradise for anglers, with one of the best populations of walley in all of Michigan's inland lakes.
* North Manistique Lake -- regular catches of 15 to 20-inch walley are available in May and June at this northern lake.
* Hubbard Lake -- at 8,850 acres it's one of the state's largest inland waters and a must-fish lake for any angler who wants walley.
* North Lake Leelanau -- ten miles north of Traverse City, this lake features a large walley population because of an abundance of high-protein forage, so walleys grow faster and larger.

* Houghton Lake -- this 20,000 acre lake is Michigan's largest and a real fish producer with plenty of walley.
* Holloway Resorvoir -- walleys up to 10 pounds are available in this manmade lake in Genesee and Lapeer counties that is ideal for Michigan walley fishing.
* Lake Huron -- this Great Lake offers some of the best walley fishing in the country, especially in summer when the water temp increases and the fish move deep.
Michigan walleye fishing anglers fish with live bait or lures that resemble small fish. A good bet is the KickTail lure from NGC Sports, the world leader in NGC Sports lures (http://www.scientificfishing.com). The lure mimics the motion of a real fish with patented technology that breaks the tail into five segments, which causes the tail to wag, unlike other hard baits. The lure was tested by professional fishermen and caught almost three times as many fish as other lures and live bait.
The KickTail is one of many fine lures available from NGC Sports, which has won awards for its tournament tested lures and has sold millions of them, but not in stores.
