PENNSYLVANIA FISHING
THE BEST PLACES FOR PENNSYLVANIA FISHING, FROM LAKE ERIE TO THE POCONO REGION
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
From Lake Erie and the Delaware River to hundreds of small backwoods trout streams, there are a variety of great places to fish in Pennsylvania. Avid anglers enjoy Pennsylvania fishing on more than 83,000 miles of streams and rivers, 4,000 inland lakes and ponds and 470,000 acres of Lake Erie. Is that enough fishing water for you?
The Lake Erie shoreline in Erie County is called the Walleye Capital of the World, with shallower waters than the other Great Lakes that are ideal for walleye reproduction. Lake Erie is also renowned for its yellow perch and is also fished for steelhead, salmon, brown trout and Chinook salmon.
Lake fishing in the Keystone state is hardly exclusive to Erie. The Great Lakes region south of Presque Isle along Rte.79 features the Pymatunig Reservoir, a 17,088 acre lake and Lake Wilhem, an 1,160 acre lake, where you can catch walleye, carp, perch, bluegill and large and smallmouth bass. Ice fishing in the winter is also popular. There are a wide variety of best fishing spots in Pennsylvania's Northeast Mountain region. Visit the Poconos and fish Beltzville, Frances Slocum and Tobyhanna Lakes and the Lehigh River for trout, striped bass, yellow perch and brown trout.

The beautiful Susquehanna River winds through fertile valleys surrounded by forest covered ridges, where anglers can explore world-class smallmouth bass fishing in the river or try Penns Creek, one of the best trout streams in America. The Allegheny Valley offers some of the best Pennsylvania fishing at Canoe, Greenwood, Locust and Cowans Gap Lakes.
Pennsylvania's biggest cities also offer excellent fishing opportunities nearby. Pittsburgh anglers can fish the Allegheny River and Keystone Lake for largemouth bass, northern pike and catfish. The Delaware River is located near Philadelphia and offers American shad, striped bass and walleye. Scotts Run and Hopewell Lake in the Philadelphia countryside offer great fishing opportunities.
What is special about Pennsylvania fishing is the country spots that few anglers know about. Ricketts Glen State Park at Benton features "beautiful waterfalls and great trout," according to one angler. Another praises the great fishing streams of Northwest Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest, including Millstone Creek, Spring Creek, Ward's Ranch Pond and Tionesta River.
As you can see, there's a wide variety of great fishing spots in Pennsylvania, and smart anglers fish the Keystone waters with the best lures. For exceptional scientifically designed lures that are guaranteed to double your catch, try NGC Sports (www.scientificfishing.com), which offers the KickTail lure with a tail broken into five segments that wag in the water like a live fish, the best way to attract hungry prey.
