SALTWATER LURES
CHOOSE SALTWATER LURES BASED ON THE
DEPTHS YOU FISH
By Ken Liebeskind

There's a wide variety of saltwater lures that can be used, depending on the species of fish being targeted, their eating habits and what depths they can be found. Don't use a surface lure for fish that swim in the sea bed and don't use a sinking lure for a fish that swims near the water surface.
If you're targeting fish that swim near the bottom of the ocean, such as cod, jigs can be the best saltwater lures, because they fall to the seabed. You can raise and drop the jig to the bottom or drag it around the seabed to entice fish.

For fish near the water's surface, such as marlin, wahoo and tuna, the best saltwater lures float or move just below the water's surface, such as chuggers or poppers. You can troll with these lures, by dragging them behind a moving boat.
Crankbaits are ideal saltwater lures for fish that swim close to shore and in shallow water, such as bass. They move through the water at a variety of depths, from the water's surface to the bottom.
There are many crank baits to choose from and a new lure from www.scientificfishing.com combines the attributes of a crank bait and a spinner bait to increase the catch rate. The Crank n' Spin lure is a 4.5 inch fat bellied shad with a minnow pattern on its lip like a crank bait that floats on the surface and swims deep on retrieval to cover a variety of water levels. It also flashes like a spinner bait and has metal balls inside that rattle, so the sound will increase your catch, too.
