SOFT SWIM BAITS
SOFT SWIM BAITS MOST POPULAR FOR BASS
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
Soft swim baits have become the most popular lure for bass anglers, but they also work well for walleye, stripers pike and other species. Soft swim baits, which feature plastic or rubber fish shaped bodies, were originally popular on the West coast, but they moved eastward and are now used everywhere. Their large size, from four to eight inches, make them popular for catching large fish, so they're often used for trophy bass.
Most soft swim baits are constructed of molded plastic, with various flavors, scents, dyes and reflective materials added, so they don't just move like live bait, but look, shine and smell like it, too.

Some of the most popular types of soft swim baits are crawfish lures, creature lure, frogs, grubs, jerkbaits, tubes and worms.
Huddleston rainbow trout with the paddletail design, Berkley's powerbait swim shads and Yum's money minnow swimbaits are a few well known brands.
Of course, if worm lures are your favorite soft swim baits, you're probably familiar with the Walking Worm from www.scientificfishing.com. This is the lure with the patented technology that traps air between tail segments, which causes the lure to constantly curl like a live worm. It can be Texas and Carolina rigged to fish for bass in weeds and brush and comes in a variety of colors for different water conditions, from chartreuse to electric blue.
The Walking Worm beat live bait, crank baits and other worm lures in tests because it moves so naturally.
