THE BEST PLACES FOR UTAH FISHING - FROM THE GREEN RIVER TO THE UINTA MOUNTAINS
by Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
From the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam to an estimated 1000 trout lakes in the Uinta Mountains, fishing opportunities in Utah abound. Anglers in the Beehive state enjoy opportunities to fish for true blue monsters, with 30+ pound trout caught occasionally.
The best place for Utah fishing may be the Green River, which has been called the best tailwater fishery in the U.S. The river starts in Northeast Utah and flows for 30 miles, passing through a beautiful red canyon. Its clear, emerald waters support a large population of trout, including rainbows, browns and cutthroats -- 6,000-8,000 fish per mile. Kokanee salmon and smallmouth bass are also available.
The Green River is located at the east end of the Uinta Mountains, a subrange of the Rockies that features over 1,000 natural lakes and 400 miles of streams that offer scenic and bountiful trout fishing. Mirror Lake and the Strawberry River are two of the best known fisheries in the Unitas, where rainbow, brook and cutthroat trout are caught.
The Provo River, which originates in the Unitas and flows 70 miles southwest to Provo, is another great Utah trout fishing spot. In southern Utah, the premier fishing spot is Lake Powell, the second largest reservoir in North America.

The majestic lake, east of Bryce and Zion National Parks on the Arizona border, is 186 miles long with 1,960 miles of shoreline, with hundreds of side canyons, inlets and coves that offer some the nation's best fishing opportunities. Striped, smallmouth and largemouth bass are available, along with walleye, catfish, crappie and northern pike. One angler said Lake Powell holds striped bass up to 50 pounds!
Another prime fishing spot in south central Utah is Boulder Mountain, which offers a number of small lakes and streams that hold trophy-size cutthroat and brook trout.
The Ogden Valley, north of Salt Lake City, provides some of the best Utah fishing at the Pineview Reservoir, with a unique blend of sportsfish, including tiger-sized muskie and northern pike. The Ogden River, located near the reservoir, offers blue ribbon trout.
In a state as large as Utah, there are a number of out of the way spots that provide great fishing. Piute County, in south central Utah, is a region of rugged canyons, lakes, deserts and 12,000 foot mountain peeks that offers great trout fishing on waterways that include Antimony, Beaver, Bullion, Cottonwood and Manning Creeks.
