VERMONT FISHING
THE BEST PLACES FOR VERMONT FISHING ... FROM LAKE CHAMPLAIN TO THE CONNECTICUT RIVER
By Ken Liebeskind
Yalesville, Connecticut
Vermont may be best known as a ski state, but that could be better for anglers who can enjoy the state's beautiful fresh waters without obtrusion. The cold, clear water found throughout the state's lakes, ponds, streams and rivers offers excellent fishing conditions for big trout and smallmouth bass, as well as walleyes, perch, pike and salmon.
There is great fishing in every region of Vermont, from Lake Champlain in the Northwest to the Northeast Kingdom's Lake Willoughby to the Winooski River in Central Vermont to the Somerset Reservoir in southern Vermont.
Lake Champlain, the majestic 271,000 acre lake on the northwest border of the state near Burlington, offers Vermont fishing for brook, rainbow and lake trout, landlocked salmon, yellow perch, walleye and more. You can fish off the docks in Burlington, so you don't even need a boat. Cold weather won't stop you either because Lake Champlain is the Ice Fishing capital of Vermont. You can also fish separate areas of the lake for individual species, such as Missisquoi Bay in the north for largemouth bass.

Head south to Central Vermont for a variety of Vermont's best warm water and cold water fishing opportunities. Two of Vermont's largest and most productive trout streams, the Lamoille and Winooski Rivers, are found here and the Woodbury-Calais Lake Region offers excellent fishing for trout, bass and panfish.
The Connecticut River, the largest river in New England, which flows along the border of Vermont and New Hampshire, provides Vermont fishing for walleye, with strong activity reported on the Bellows Falls Dam. Smallmouth bass and trout are also available.
The Northeast Kingdom, from Essex to Caledonia counties, is a majestic region full of beautiful lakes, ponds, rivers and streams where the trout fishing is spectacular. Try Caspian Lake in Craftsbury, Lake Memphremagog in Newport and the Lamoille River in Hardwick for exceptional brook, rainbow and brown trout opportunities. The Clyde River, which runs upstream from Lake Memphremagog, is renowned for its salmon runs.
Two more great Vermont fishing lakes are Somerset Reservoir, a 1,600-acre lake in Windham county in the southern part of the state and Lake Bomoseen, a 2,400 acre lake in the west central part of the state
As you can see, there's plenty of great fresh water Vermont fishing and to enjoy the experience even more, make sure you're equipped with the best lures. NGC Sports (www.scientificfishing.com), the world leader in scientifically designed lures, offers many that will double your catch in Vermont's cool, clear waters, including the Walking Worm, which uses patented technology to trap air between the tail segments to make it constantly curl, which attracts bass and other predatory fish.
